Planning an Outdoor Kitchen With a Pizza Oven: A Homeowner & Contractor Guide

Planning an outdoor kitchen with a built-in pizza oven

A wood-fired oven is the feature that turns a nice patio into an outdoor kitchen people remember. But dropping one into a build takes a little planning — whether you're a homeowner designing your dream space or a contractor sourcing an oven for a client. Here's how to get it right.

1. Pick the oven size to fit the build

Built-in kits are made to be set permanently into a masonry or modular surround. The AD70 suits tighter kitchens, the AD100 is the mid-size option, and the AD120 is the extra-large option for serious entertainers. Nail the size before the surround is designed — not after.

2. Design clearances in from the start

Don't skip this step. The oven needs proper clearance from combustible materials, the right chimney height, and a safe operating zone in front of the door. Build the enclosure from non-combustible materials (masonry, stone, concrete board) and keep the structure open and ventilated. Get the manufacturer's spec sheet and your local building department involved before anything is poured. (I wrote a whole guide on clearance and safety — worth a read.)

3. Plan the workflow around it

Think about how you'll actually cook: prep space beside the oven, a landing spot for hot pans, wood storage within reach, and counter room for launching and pulling pizzas. Good outdoor kitchens make the oven the anchor and build the flow around it.

4. Coordinate delivery and installation

These ovens ship on freight. Freight to the lower 48 is included, with liftgate delivery. Inspect the shipment before you sign; if anything is damaged, note it on the delivery receipt and call us. We'll handle the claim with the distributor and manufacturer. Call us for timing on your item, and make sure your build timeline lines up with when the oven arrives so it's not sitting crated for weeks — or holding up your masons. We don't install — your licensed installer/contractor does.
