What a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Actually Costs to Install

Napoleon Elevation X 42 direct vent gas fireplace with Zen front and driftwood logs in a living room

The number people plan a fireplace around is the firebox price. That is one line on the invoice, and on a direct vent gas fireplace it is not the line that surprises anyone. The surprise is the four lines under it. This guide prices a complete Napoleon Elevation X 42 build from our site today, itemizes the vent package, separates what a hearth dealer sells from what a building supply sells, and quotes what Napoleon's warranty requires of the installation. Every requirement below comes from Napoleon's installation manual W415-2000 (revision L-0, 09.29.25) and owner's manual W415-2001 for the EX36 and EX42; every price is from our product pages.

The Firebox Is Not the Fireplace

Napoleon ships the Elevation X as a firebox. In the crate: the appliance, the remote and receiver, the eFIRE Bluetooth module, the blower, the premium safety barrier, a vent restrictor plate, installation screws, and a 1" insulation sleeve for the first 3 ft of vent pipe. That is all.

A working installation needs four more things, and Napoleon's manual treats each as a separate decision:

  • A log set. The Elevation X ships without logs. Napoleon lists the High Definition log sets (birch, driftwood or split oak) as the media for the EX36 and EX42.
  • Decorative panels. The panels are the firebox interior. Without the brick, ledgestone, porcelain or glass set, it is a bare firebox.
  • A finishing kit, chosen at framing stage. From the finish framing section of the manual: "It is necessary early on to choose either a non-combustible finishing kit (NCEX36/42) or a combustible finishing kit (DHCEX/DHMEX). Specific framing requirements need to be considered depending on which kit is used." (W415-2000, page 35.) The combustible route needs an air outlet opening in the enclosure; the non-combustible route does not. This cannot be decided after the wall is framed.
  • A complete vent package. Nothing in the crate gets exhaust to the outdoors. Pipe, terminal, firestop and sealant are all separate parts.

A dealer who quotes you the firebox has quoted you the first item on this list.

The Complete Build, Priced

Elevation X 42, natural gas or propane, with birch logs, brick panels, the Dynamic Heat Control finishing kit and a 20 ft straight vertical vent run through the roof. Prices are current on our site; the fireplace price includes freight to the lower 48 states with liftgate delivery.

Line Part Price Status
Firebox Elevation X 42 (EX42NTEL natural gas / EX42PTEL propane) $5,549 The appliance
Log set High Definition birch log set (BLKEX42) $479 Required
Decorative panels Brick panels (DBPEX42, Glacier or Old Town Red / Westminster Grey / Newport) $379–$389 Required
Finishing kit Dynamic Heat Control (DHCEX), the combustible-finish option $125 Required (one of NCEX42, DHCEX, DHMEXS or DHMEXF)
Vent package 20 ft vertical run, Napoleon 5"/8" flex, pitched-roof terminal (itemized below) About $1,200 Required, sized to your route
Equipment total About $7,730 Before installation labor

Three things move that total. Driftwood or split oak logs are $629 instead of $479. Porcelain panels are $399, ledgestone $959, black glass $859. And the finishing kit choice runs from $125 (DHCEX) to $469–$529 for the ducted heat management kits (DHMEXS side discharge, DHMEXF front discharge). Fronts and trims are optional and start at $429 on the EX42.

The Elevation X 42 is certified as a vented decorative gas appliance, not a heater. Its maximum input is 45,000 BTU/h on natural gas and 39,000 BTU/h on propane (W415-2000, page 5).

What Is in a Vent Package

"Venting" sounds like one part. For a 20 ft vertical run with Napoleon's 5"/8" flexible vent it is a list, and every line on it is named in the manual.

Component Napoleon part What the manual says
Flex vent kits GD430 (10 ft) or GD420 (5 ft) "With flexible venting, in conjunction with the various terminations, use either the 5 foot (1.5m) vent kit GD420 or the 10 foot (3.1m) vent kit GD430." (Page 13.) A 20 ft run is two GD430 kits.
Roof terminal kit GD410 (1/12 to 7/12 pitch), GD411 (8/12 to 12/12 pitch) or GD412 (flat roof) The manual names the kit by roof pitch (page 13). Its vertical installation steps call for the terminal, an air terminal connector, flashing and a storm collar (pages 25–27). The manual does not print a packing list for the kit; confirm the contents before the roofer is on site.
Coupler kit Sold separately Two flex kits have to be joined. The manual's vent connection drawings show an inner coupler and an outer coupler at the joint (page 26) and do not list them as part of a vent kit. The vent kits do not ship with couplers; this is the part that gets left off quotes.
Ceiling firestop W500-0028 "For 5"/8" appliances: When using flex venting, use firestop assembly W500-0028 (not supplied)." (Page 25.) With rigid venting the firestop is 5DFS. One is required at the bottom of every framed opening in a ceiling or roof the vent passes through.
Wall firestop W010-4479 Only for a horizontal (through-the-wall) termination: "When using flex venting, use firestop assembly W010-4479 (not supplied)." (Page 24.) Not part of a straight vertical run.
High-temperature sealant Mill Pac, W573-0007 The exhaust pipe connection at the appliance flue collar "must be sealed using the black high temperature sealant Mill Pac" (page 14); the manual lists it as not supplied (page 25).

Our package for that run comes to about $1,200. A wall termination is a different parts list (a wall terminal kit, GD422R-2 or ST58U-1, flex to suit the rise and the run, and the W010-4479 firestop), and a run with offsets adds elbows and couplers. The vent is quoted separately because it is sized to the route, and the route is the building's, not the fireplace's. If your installer sources venting, they need this list; if they don't, we quote it as its own line.

Planning a vertical run through a vaulted room? Venting a gas fireplace through a cathedral ceiling covers the firestop rule, run limits and the parts that get missed.

What the Contractor Supplies, Not the Dealer

Several things the manual requires are not fireplace parts. They are building materials, and they belong on the contractor's material list, from a building supply, not on a special order from a hearth dealer at special-order prices.

  • Non-combustible board for the finish around the opening. The manual: "finishing must be done using a non-combustible board, ceramic tile, marble, etc. Do NOT use wood or drywall. Any fire rated drywall is not acceptable." (W415-2000, page 18.) Section 9.7 of the manual covers installing it for a non-DHM/DHC installation (page 40).
  • Vent support strapping. "The vent system must be supported every 3' (0.9m) for both vertical and horizontal runs," using "support ring assembly W010-0067 or equivalent non-combustible strapping" (page 13). On a 20 ft run that is at least six support points. The "equivalent non-combustible strapping" is metal strapping, a building-supply item.
  • Red RTV silicone for the vent joints other than the flue collar. Napoleon's part number is W573-0002, listed as not supplied (page 26); a high-temperature red RTV from a building supply is the same product category.
  • Weatherproof caulking for the flashing and storm collar (page 27), and the framing lumber, fasteners and drywall for the chase.

None of this is on our quote, and it shouldn't be on anyone's.

What the Warranty Requires

The Elevation X carries the Napoleon President's Lifetime Limited Warranty. The warranty terms printed in Napoleon's owner's manual W415-2001 state that the gas appliance "must be installed by a licensed, authorized service technician or contractor," and that installation must be done in accordance with the installation instructions and all local and national building and fire codes. The installation manual says the same on page 8: "THIS GAS APPLIANCE MUST BE INSTALLED AND SERVICED BY A QUALIFIED INSTALLER to conform with local codes."

American Hearth Supply supplies the equipment. We do not install, and nothing on this page is installation advice. The installer's price, the gas line, the hardwired 120 V circuit the Elevation X requires, framing, the non-combustible finish and permits are all outside the equipment total above, and we will not guess at them; get your licensed installer's number against the manual, which we send with every quote.

Why Quotes Differ

Put two dealer quotes for "an Elevation X 42" side by side and they can be $2,000 apart while both being honest. One is a firebox price. The other is a complete build.

Before comparing numbers, compare line items:

  • Is the log set on the quote? It is required, and it is $479 to $629 on the EX42.
  • Are the decorative panels on it? Required, $379 to $959.
  • Is the finishing kit named? NCEX42, DHCEX, DHMEXS or DHMEXF; one of them has to be chosen before framing.
  • Is the vent package itemized, with a terminal kit for your roof pitch, the coupler kit and the W500-0028 firestop?
  • Is freight included, and to the door with a liftgate, or to a terminal?

A quote that is missing the log set, panels, finishing kit and venting is missing about $2,200 of required parts on this build. That is the whole difference, and it shows up on install day, not on the estimate.

We quote the complete build: firebox, required interior, finishing kit, options and venting, checked against Napoleon's installation manual for the exact model. If the smaller model or the cheaper panel is the right call, that is what the quote will say.
