What Comes With a Gas Fireplace? Napoleon & Monessen Box Contents Explained

Napoleon Elevation X 42 direct vent gas fireplace

What comes with a gas fireplace is a firebox plus a model-specific set of parts, and that set changes from one product family to the next. The Napoleon Elevation X, for example, needs decorative panels that its installation manual says are sold separately, while the Monessen Artisan IFT 2.0 ships with its crushed-glass media and, on the 48" and 60", an RC450 remote. For the Elevation X and Vector, vent pipe, terminals, the ceiling firestop and ordinary building materials are not listed as supplied. This guide sorts each model's parts into four buckets, taken from the manufacturer's installation manual for that exact model: in the box, required separately, job-site material, and optional.

Category What it means Typical examples
In the box The manual says it is supplied with the appliance Insulation sleeve, restrictor plate, safety barrier, glass media (Artisan)
Required separately The appliance cannot be completed without it, and the manual lists it as not supplied or sold separately Elevation X decorative panels, vent pipe and terminal, firestops
Job-site material Construction material the installation calls for that is not a fireplace part Non-combustible finishing material, strapping, sealant, framing lumber
Optional Changes the look or function but is not needed to operate Fronts and trims; the Artisan 42" light kit

Included vs. Required Separately: Model-by-Model Summary

This table summarizes the sections below. Every entry comes from the installation manual named in the right-hand column; page numbers are in the model sections and in the source list at the end.

Napoleon Elevation X: What Comes in the Box

Elevation X 42, shown finished with optional panels, logs and front.

According to Napoleon installation manual W415-2000, revision L-0 (09.29.25), which covers the EX36 and EX42, the following are supplied with the appliance:

  • Safety barrier. "A barrier designed to reduce the risk of burns from the hot viewing glass is provided with the appliance and must be installed" (p. 5).
  • Hardware. The hardware list shows 25 #9-14 × 1/2" screws and three sets of four other screws; "only fasteners supplied with the appliance will be illustrated" (p. 12).
  • Insulation sleeve. The first 3 ft of 8" outer vent pipe "must be wrapped in the 1" (25mm) thick insulation sleeve (supplied)" (p. 14).
  • Restrictor plate. For vertical installations, "the restrictor plate (supplied)" can be installed flat or bent to restrict the exhaust (p. 28).

The EX42 replacement-parts list includes left and right blower assemblies and a Bluetooth control module (W415-2000, pp. 56–57), and the owner's manual (W415-2001) is written around remote-control operation. The installation manual itself does not print a single "what's in the box" list for those components.

Does the Napoleon Elevation X include the log set?

At American Hearth Supply, the Elevation X firebox and its log set are separate items: the EX42 log sets are BLKEX42 (birch), DLKEX42 (driftwood) and OLKEX42 (split oak). The installation manual lists those three kits under their own part numbers in its replacement-parts section (p. 58) and includes log placement as a finishing step, but it does not print a one-line "logs not included" statement. Plan the log set as its own line on the order.

Does the Elevation X include decorative panels?

No. The manual is explicit: "This appliance does not include decorative brick panels, however, panels are required. Panel kits are sold separately" (W415-2000, p. 38).

Does the Elevation X include venting?

No vent pipe or terminal is listed as supplied. The Elevation X uses a 5" exhaust / 8" intake vent system (p. 13). The wall firestop (W010-4479 for flex, 5DFSH for rigid) and the ceiling firestop (W500-0028 for 5"/8" flex) are each marked "not supplied" (pp. 24–25), as are the red RTV and Mill Pac sealants (p. 23).

Which finishing choice must be made early?

The manual states: "It is necessary early on to choose either a non-combustible finishing kit (NCEX36/42) or a combustible finishing kit (DHCEX/DHMEX). Specific framing requirements need to be considered depending on which kit is used" (p. 18). Napoleon's NCEX36/42 kit contains one top panel and two side panels (instruction leaflet W415-2752). The manual does not list either kit as supplied with the appliance.

See the Napoleon Elevation X direct-vent fireplace configurations for the EX36 and EX42. For a focused answer on the log set, see Does a Napoleon Elevation X come with logs?

Napoleon Vector: What's Supplied and What Isn't

The Napoleon Vector installation manual, W415-2034 revision D-0 (01.29.26), covers the LV38-1, LV50-2, LV62 and LV74 in single-sided and see-through versions. It is more specific than most about supplied parts:

  • Gas connection: "Connect the gas supply to the 1/2" (13mm) shut off and flex connector (supplied)" (p. 44).
  • Wall firestop spacer: "When passing through a wall, use firestop spacer W615-10007332 (supplied)" (pp. 28–29).
  • Ceiling firestop spacer: "When passing through a ceiling, use firestop spacer W500-0028 (not supplied)" (pp. 28–29).
  • Vent shield: a telescopic shield adjusted to cover the first 30" of vertical vent. The installation steps start by unscrewing the fasteners already on the vent shield assembly, and see-through models need two (p. 37). The manual does not label the shield itself "supplied" or "not supplied."
  • Controls: "This appliance is equipped with a remote control and a wall switch, which requires batteries to be installed" (p. 5).
  • Sealants: red RTV W573-0002 and Mill Pac W573-0007 are marked not supplied (pp. 31, 34).

The Vector's replacement-parts pages (pp. 70–73) list no blower. Compare sizes on the Napoleon Vector linear fireplace page.

Napoleon Tall Linear Vector: Is There a Built-In Blower?

The manual's supplied-parts/parts information does not list a built-in blower. Napoleon installation manual W415-4121, revision E-0 (01.29.26), covers the TLV50, TLV62 and TLV74; its replacement-parts section (pp. 70–73) contains no blower or fan, and its maintenance section says only "if equipped with a blower" (p. 65). Like the Vector, the Tall Linear Vector "is equipped with a remote control and a wall switch" (p. 5). For how the two linear lines differ, see Tall Vector vs. Vector.

Monessen Artisan IFT 2.0: Media, Remote and Lights by Size

Monessen Artisan 60 inch vent-free linear gas fireplace in a living room with patio view

The Monessen Artisan is a vent-free appliance, so it has no vent package at all. Its "Getting Started" parts list in installation manual 4099-903 Rev. D (12/25), page 6, reads:

  • Unvented gas heater
  • Two anchoring screws
  • Installation and owner's instructions
  • 7.25" non-combustible board
  • Deflector glass
  • Crushed glass media: four bags on the 42" and 48", five bags on the 60"
  • RC450 remote control on the 48" and 60"

Does the Monessen Artisan include a remote?

Yes on the 48", 60" and 72"; no on the 42". Page 26 of the same manual says: "The AVFL48, AVFL60, and AVFL72 ship standard with a remote to turn the appliance on and off as well as control the LED lights. The AVFL42 appliances ship without a remote and LED lights but the IFT2-AVFL42LED light kit can be purchased separately." That kit includes LED lights, wiring and a remote for the lights.

The manual covers the AVFL72, but its page 6 parts list does not state a media bag count for the 72", and page 26 does not name the 72" remote's model number. Those figures are not published in 4099-903 Rev. D.

Two items are needed from outside the box: the junction box must be wired to 110–120 VAC, and the four AA batteries for the backup battery pack are "not included" (p. 27). Sizes and configurations are on the Monessen Artisan vent-free fireplace page and in the Monessen Artisan size guide.

Electric Fireplaces Ship Differently

An electric fireplace has no gas line, burner or vent, so its box looks different. Napoleon's Astound Built-In manual, W415-4170 revision K-0 (June 5, 2026), shows the carton holding the appliance plus "Logs and Media (Quantities vary by appliance size.)", the manual, and a "Hardware Kit and Remote" (p. 7). What the Astound Built-In needs from outside the box is electrical: "It is necessary to hard-wire this appliance. A qualified electrician must wire the appliance directly to the household wiring" (p. 13), on a dedicated 15-amp grounded circuit at 120V or 240V (p. 6). The wall-mount controller is optional (pp. 13–15).

Why the Firebox Price Is Not the Complete Fireplace Cost

The Napoleon Elevation X EX42's listed firebox price does not represent every component required for a complete installation. Using current American Hearth Supply prices (checked September 28, 2026):

Line Status Price
Elevation X EX42 firebox (EX42NTEL or EX42PTEL) The appliance $5,549
EX42 log set (BLKEX42 birch; driftwood or split oak $629) Separate item $479
EX42 brick decorative panels (DBPEX42) Required, sold separately (W415-2000 p. 38) $379–$389
Subtotal $6,407–$6,417
Finishing kit choice: NCEX36/42, DHCEX ($125), or DHMEXS/DHMEXF ($469/$529) Chosen before framing (p. 18) Varies
Vent package Not supplied; depends on the route Illustrative allowance below

A vent package for one real-world layout (a 20 ft straight vertical run with 5"/8" flex through a pitched roof) comes to roughly $1,200, but the exact vent bill depends on the run and the components required. It is an illustrative project allowance, not a manufacturer package price. With DHCEX and that allowance, the equipment for that one example comes to about $7,732–$7,742 before installation labor, gas line, electrical work, framing or finishing. Our direct-vent fireplace installation cost guide itemizes that vent package part by part.

That is why two dealer quotes can look far apart: one may show only the firebox while the other shows the parts needed for the customer's actual configuration. Compare line items before comparing totals.

Materials Contractors Usually Source Locally

Some materials the manuals call for are ordinary construction materials rather than fireplace parts, and contractors commonly buy them locally because the exact materials depend on the installation and local code. From W415-2000:

  • Non-combustible finishing material around the opening. "Finishing must be done using a non-combustible board, ceramic tile, marble, etc. Do NOT use wood or drywall" (p. 18). The Artisan is the exception among these models: its 7.25" non-combustible board is in the box (4099-903, p. 6).
  • Vent support. The vent must be supported every 3 ft using "support ring assembly W010-0067 or equivalent non-combustible strapping" (p. 13).
  • Framing lumber and fasteners for the enclosure, built to the manual's framing dimensions.

This is a planning list, not installation instructions. Your installer works from the manual, local code and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. American Hearth Supply supplies equipment and does not perform installation.

Do These Fireplaces Heat the Room?

What comes in the box is only half the planning question. The other half is what the appliance is certified to do: the Elevation X, Vector and Tall Linear Vector manuals certify them as vented decorative gas appliances, while the Monessen Artisan is listed as an unvented room heater for supplemental heat. Our gas vs. electric fireplace guide compares those certifications, BTU input and electric wattage model by model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Napoleon Elevation X include logs?

Not as part of the firebox listing. The EX42 log sets (BLKEX42, DLKEX42, OLKEX42) are separate items, listed under their own part numbers in installation manual W415-2000. See Does a Napoleon Elevation X come with logs? for the full answer.

Does a Napoleon fireplace include venting?

Not for the Elevation X or Vector. Their manuals list the ceiling firestop and vent sealants as not supplied, and the vent pipe and terminal are sized to the building's route. The Vector does include a wall firestop spacer and a gas shut-off with flex connector.

Does the Monessen Artisan include a remote?

The 48", 60" and 72" ship with a remote (RC450 named for the 48" and 60"). The 42" ships without a remote or LED lights; the IFT2-AVFL42LED kit adds both.

Does a gas fireplace come with everything needed for installation?

No model covered here does. Direct-vent units need venting and firestops, the Elevation X needs panels, and every gas unit needs a gas supply and a qualified installer.

Why does the complete fireplace price differ from the firebox price?

The firebox price covers the appliance. Required parts such as panels, venting and a finishing-kit choice are separate lines, and the vent bill depends on the route.
