The Monessen Artisan IFT 2.0 comes in 8 size and fuel configurations — four widths (42", 48", 60", 72") in natural gas or propane, $2,969–$6,749 — which is great for fitting your exact room, and paralyzing when you're staring at the options list. Here's how to narrow eight choices down to one.
Step 1: Fuel — Natural Gas or Propane?
This one's decided for you by what's at your house. Natural gas line → NG model. No gas service (rural, or propane tank on site) → LP model. If you're not sure what you have, look at your utility bill or call us — ordering the wrong fuel type is the #1 avoidable mistake on gas fireplace orders.
Step 2: Width — Match the Wall, Not the Budget
The Artisan's size options exist because rooms differ. Use the same rule we apply to every linear fireplace: the unit should span roughly 1/2 to 2/3 of the wall section it anchors (full sizing method →).
- 42" → dens, offices, bedrooms, walls in the 5–7 ft range
- 48" → standard living rooms, 7–9 ft wall sections
- 60" and 72" → great rooms and open-concept spaces where a smaller unit would disappear
All four widths share the same 39½" height and slim 13⅜" appliance depth, so width is the only dimension that changes your framing plan. Buying a size down to save money is the regret we hear most. The wall doesn't change after installation — pick the size the wall needs.
Step 3: Confirm Vent-Free Is Right for Your Room
The Artisan IFT 2.0 is a vent-free unit — no chimney, no flue, which is exactly why installation is so flexible and why nearly all the heat stays in your room. Vent-free units are room-size rated and include an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) that shuts the unit down automatically if oxygen drops. Monessen's rule is a room of at least 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU/hr of input — so a 42" natural gas unit at 34,000 BTU/hr needs roughly 1,700 cubic feet (about a 14 × 15 ft room with 8 ft ceilings), and the 60" and 72" at 40,000 BTU/hr need about 2,000. We wrote a full, honest breakdown of vent-free safety, local code considerations, and when vented is the better call: Are Vent-Free Gas Fireplaces Safe? →
Short version: match the unit to your room size per the spec sheet, check your local codes (we'll help — call with your zip), and add a CO detector as cheap insurance. If your jurisdiction doesn't allow vent-free, or you have an easy path to an exterior wall, a direct-vent unit like the Napoleon Vector linear is the alternative — here's how the two compare →.
Why the Artisan Specifically
- Real heat, not just looks. Unlike electric linears, the Artisan is a legitimate heater — up to 40,000 BTU/hr, and vent-free efficiency means the warmth stays in the room.
- Linear modern design that competes visually with electric units costing similar money, while actually heating your space.
- Monessen pedigree — decades of hearth manufacturing behind the warranty.

FAQ
Do I need a chimney or venting?
No — that's the point of vent-free. No flue, no exterior wall requirement, dramatically simpler installation.
Who should install it?
A licensed gas professional. Gas connection work isn't a DIY project — budget the installer into your project cost. We don't install; we send the manual and clearance specs your installer needs.
Can I convert between natural gas and propane later?
Order the correct fuel configuration up front — that's why we ask before anything ships. Call us if you're unsure what you have.
Which size is right for my room?
Send us your wall width and room dimensions. One phone call, exact answer.
