Electric fireplace vs gas fireplace comes down to what each appliance is certified to do, not the fuel. An electric fireplace with a heater is rated in watts at a stated voltage, so its heating capacity is a published number. The Napoleon direct vent gas fireplaces covered here are certified as vented decorative gas appliances, and their manuals say they are "not a source of heat." The Monessen Artisan vent-free gas fireplace is certified as an unvented room heater for supplemental heat, "not intended for use as a primary heat source." If the goal is heating a room, compare the rated wattage or the certification of the exact model. If the goal is the look of a fire, both work.

Do Electric Fireplaces Heat a Room?
Yes, an electric fireplace with a heater does heat a room, up to its rated wattage. The Napoleon Astound Built-In (NEFB50AB to NEFB96AB) is rated at 1,500 W maximum on 120V AC or 3,000 W maximum on 240V AC, on a dedicated 15 amp grounded circuit (Napoleon W415-4170, rev. K-0, 06.05.2026). The manual publishes no square-foot heating area for the model, so this guide does not give one.
Wattage converts to BTU with a fixed factor: 1 W equals 3.412 BTU per hour. That makes 1,500 W about 5,100 BTU per hour and 3,000 W about 10,200 BTU per hour. This is arithmetic on the rated maximum. The manual itself publishes no BTU figure for the Astound.
Electric Fireplace Heat Output: What Do the Watts and Voltage Mean?
The wattage is the maximum electricity the heater can draw, and the voltage is the circuit it is wired to. On the Astound Built-In, the same fireplace is 1,500 W on a 120V circuit or 3,000 W on a 240V circuit, so the voltage the electrician wires it to sets the ceiling on heater output. The manual states: "It is necessary to hard-wire this appliance. A qualified electrician must wire the appliance directly to the household wiring" (W415-4170, rev. K-0). It offers no plug-in option.
Is 120V or 240V better for an electric fireplace?
Neither is better in general. For the Astound Built-In, 120V allows up to 1,500 W and 240V allows up to 3,000 W, so 240V is the choice when more heater capacity is wanted and a 240V circuit can be run to the wall. Confirm the circuit with your licensed electrician before choosing.
Can an electric fireplace run the flame without heat?
Yes. The Astound Built-In heater settings are H-0 (heater and blower off), FAN (heater off, blower on) and H-1 (heater and blower on) (W415-4170, rev. K-0). The flame is a lighting effect, so it can run with the heater off. The manual does not publish a wattage for flame-only operation. Other electric models differ, so check the manual for the exact unit.
Does a Gas Fireplace Heat a Room?
It depends on the certification printed in the manual for that model. The Napoleon Elevation X and Tall Linear Vector manuals state: "This appliance is a decorative product. It is not a source of heat and not intended to burn solid fuel" (W415-2000, rev. L-0, p. 5). The Monessen Artisan manual states: "NOT INTENDED FOR USE AS A PRIMARY HEAT SOURCE. This appliance is tested and approved as either supplemental room heat or as a decorative appliance" (Monessen 4099-903, Rev. D, p. 4). Neither manual certifies its gas fireplace as a primary heat source.
What Do the Gas Fireplace Certifications Actually Mean?
The certification is the standard the appliance was tested to, and the standard decides what the manufacturer may call the appliance. Two different standards appear in the manuals reviewed here.
| Model | Type | Certification per manual | Heating role per manual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Napoleon Elevation X 42 (EX42) | Direct vent gas | CSA 2.22 / ANSI Z21.50, vented decorative gas appliances | "Not a source of heat" |
| Napoleon Tall Linear Vector (TLV50N, TLV62N, TLV74N) | Direct vent gas | CSA 2.22 / ANSI Z21.50, vented decorative gas appliances | "Not a source of heat" |
| Monessen Artisan (AVFL42, AVFL48) | Vent-free gas | ANSI Z21.11.2:19, unvented room heaters | Supplemental room heat or decorative; not a primary heat source |
| Napoleon Astound Built-In (NEFB50AB to NEFB96AB) | Electric | Tested to CSA Standards for fixed and location-dedicated electric room appliances | Heater rated 1,500 W at 120V or 3,000 W at 240V (maximum) |

A vented decorative gas appliance (CSA 2.22 / ANSI Z21.50) connects to a vent system to the outdoors. An unvented room heater (ANSI Z21.11.2) has no vent and uses air from the room it heats. Certification and the manufacturer's instructions control; local code and the authority having jurisdiction can add requirements.
Is Gas Fireplace BTU the Heat You Get?
No. The BTU per hour figure in a gas fireplace manual is maximum input, the maximum fuel energy the burner can use in an hour. It is not heat delivered to the room. None of the manuals reviewed here publishes a heat-output or efficiency figure next to the input table, so room heat cannot be calculated from input BTU, and this guide does not try.
| Model | Maximum input, natural gas | Maximum input, propane | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Napoleon Elevation X 42 (EX42NTEL / EX42PTEL) | 45,000 BTU/h | 39,000 BTU/h | W415-2000 rev. L-0, p. 5; spec sheet W415-2777 rev. E-0 |
| Napoleon Tall Linear Vector 50 (TLV50N / TLV50P) | 36,000 BTU/h | 31,500 BTU/h | W415-4121 rev. E-0, p. 6 |
| Napoleon Tall Linear Vector 62 (TLV62N / TLV62P) | 44,000 BTU/h | 38,000 BTU/h | W415-4121 rev. E-0, p. 6 |
| Napoleon Tall Linear Vector 74 (TLV74N / TLV74P) | 48,000 BTU/h | 41,500 BTU/h | W415-4121 rev. E-0, p. 6 |
| Monessen Artisan 42 (AVFL42NIF-BU / AVFL42PIF-BU) | 34,000 BTU/h | 33,000 BTU/h | 4099-903 Rev. D, p. 4 |
| Monessen Artisan 48 (AVFL48NIF / AVFL48PIF) | 39,000 BTU/h | 38,000 BTU/h | 4099-903 Rev. D, p. 4 |
Which Gas Fireplaces Have a Blower?
The Napoleon Elevation X has a blower; the Napoleon Tall Linear Vector's installation manual lists none in its replacement parts. The Elevation X manual describes the blower cycle: "the blower will automatically come on 5 minutes after the main burner has been turned on and remain on twelve minutes after it has been turned off" (Napoleon W415-2001, rev. A, 03.13.20, p. 9). The blower is tied to the burner cycle, so it is not a way to move air with the flame off, unlike the fan-only setting on the electric Astound. A blower moves air across the appliance; it does not change the certification.
The Tall Linear Vector installation manual (W415-4121, rev. E-0) lists no blower among its replacement parts, and the TLV50 specification leaflet (W415-4142) does not list one. The Monessen Artisan manual warns against adding one: "Do not use a blower insert, heat exchanger insert or other accessory not approved for use with this heater."
What Is the Room Volume Rule for a Vent-Free Gas Fireplace?
The Monessen Artisan manual cites the National Fuel Gas Code rule that a space is confined when its volume is less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU per hour of the total input of the appliances in it (4099-903, Rev. D, p. 6). The manual says the heater must not be installed in a confined space or unusually tight construction unless provisions are made for adequate combustion and ventilation air, and it states: "DO NOT install this appliance in a bedroom or bathroom."
Worked example, arithmetic on the manual's rule: the Artisan 48 on natural gas has a maximum input of 39,000 BTU/h, so 39 x 50 equals 1,950 cubic feet of room volume for that appliance alone. Any other gas appliance in the same space adds its input to the total. Local code may apply stricter rules, so confirm vent-free eligibility with your authority having jurisdiction before choosing one. See our vent-free safety guide and vent-free vs direct vent comparison.

How Do Running Costs Compare, Gas vs Electric?
Running cost is energy used times your utility rate, and the manuals give the energy side. This guide does not publish dollar figures because they depend on your rates and hours of use.
Electric: the Astound heater at its maximum uses 1.5 kWh per hour on 120V or 3.0 kWh per hour on 240V. Multiply by your price per kWh.
Gas: the Elevation X 42 at maximum input uses 45,000 BTU per hour of natural gas. One therm is 100,000 BTU, so that is 0.45 therm per hour. Multiply by your price per therm. On the same scale, 45,000 BTU per hour is about 13.2 kW of fuel energy. That is fuel input, not heat delivered to the room, so it cannot be compared directly with the electric heater's 3.0 kW.
Electric vs Gas Fireplace: Which Should You Buy?
If the goal is heating a room, choose by published rating. An electric fireplace with a heater gives a stated maximum, 1,500 W on 120V or 3,000 W on 240V for the Astound Built-In. Of the gas models here, the Monessen Artisan is the one approved for supplemental heat, and then where the room volume rule and local code allow. The Napoleon direct vent models are certified as decorative appliances. No appliance reviewed here is rated as a primary heat source.
If the goal is the look, both work. Electric runs the flame with the heater off and needs no gas line or vent, though the built-in models here still need a hard-wired dedicated circuit. Direct vent gas gives a real flame, needs a vent route to the outdoors and a gas supply, and must be installed by a qualified installer.
