The equipment for a complete direct vent gas fireplace build comes to about $7,617 for a Napoleon Elevation X 42, and the firebox is $5,549 of it. That figure adds the firebox, the required birch log set, the required decorative panels and a 20 ft vertical vent package. It does not include the licensed installer's labor, the gas line, electrical, framing, the non-combustible finish or permits, because no manufacturer document publishes those and they vary by house. A gas fireplace installation cost quote that starts and ends at the firebox price is missing the lines below.

What Does a Gas Fireplace Cost?
The Napoleon Elevation X 42 firebox is $5,549 (EX42NTEL natural gas or EX42PTEL propane). Napoleon ships a firebox, and a working fireplace adds the log set, panels and vent. Prices are from our product pages; the installer's price is separate and not published here.
| Line | Part | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Firebox | Elevation X 42 (EX42NTEL / EX42PTEL) | $5,549 |
| Birch log set (required) | BLKEX42 | $479 |
| Decorative panels (required) | Brick panels, EX42 | $389 |
| Vent package, 20 ft vertical | Itemized below | About $1,200 |
| Equipment subtotal | About $7,617 | |
One more line is not in that subtotal. The installation manual says a finishing kit must be chosen early, either non-combustible (NCEX36/42) or combustible (DHCEX/DHMEX), because the framing differs (Napoleon W415-2000, rev. L-0). The DHCEX option is $125 on our site, which would bring the subtotal to about $7,742. Other panel and log finishes cost more: driftwood or split oak logs are $629 for the EX42.
The Elevation X 42 maximum input is 45,000 BTU/h on natural gas and 39,000 BTU/h on propane. It is certified as a vented decorative gas appliance, and the manual states it "is not a source of heat" (W415-2000, rev. L-0, p. 5; spec sheet W415-2777, rev. E-0).
How Much Does a Gas Fireplace Cost to Install?
The equipment for this build is about $7,617 to $7,742, and the installation labor is on top of it. The installation cost itself, meaning the installer's labor, gas line, electrical, framing, finish and permits, is not published in any Napoleon document, so this guide does not estimate it. Get a written number from a licensed installer, and give the installer the parts list in this guide so both prices cover the same fireplace.
What Is in a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Vent Package?
A vent package is a list of separate parts, not one part. For a 20 ft straight vertical run through the roof with Napoleon's 5"/8" flexible vent, the installation manual (W415-2000, rev. L-0) names these components.
| Component | Napoleon part | What the manual says |
|---|---|---|
| Roof terminal kit | GD410 (1/12 to 7/12 pitch), GD411 (8/12 to 12/12 pitch) or GD412 (flat roof) | The kit is chosen by roof pitch. The manual prints no packing list for it, so confirm its contents before the roofer arrives. |
| Flex pipe kits | GD430 (10 ft) or GD420 (5 ft) | A 20 ft run is two GD430 kits. |
| Coupler kit | Sold separately | Couplers are not included with the pipe kits. Joining two kits takes an inner and an outer coupler, which the manual's connection drawings show but does not list as part of a pipe kit. |
| Ceiling firestop | W500-0028 | "When using flex venting, use firestop assembly W500-0028 (not supplied)." |
| High-temperature sealant | Mill Pac, W573-0007 | The exhaust connection at the flue collar "must be sealed using the black high temperature sealant Mill Pac"; it is listed as not supplied. |
Our vent package for this run is about $1,200. Individual prices for each component are not itemized on our site, so this guide does not list them. A wall termination is a different parts list, and a run with offsets adds elbows and couplers. Planning a vaulted room? See venting a gas fireplace through a cathedral ceiling.
What Does the Contractor Supply Instead of the Dealer?
Several requirements in the manual are building materials, not fireplace parts, and they belong on the contractor's material list from a building supply.
- Non-combustible board for the finish around the opening. The manual: "finishing must be done using a non-combustible board, ceramic tile, marble, etc. Do NOT use wood or drywall" (W415-2000, rev. L-0, p. 18).
- Support strapping. The vent must be supported every 3 ft (0.9 m) using "support ring assembly W010-0067 or equivalent non-combustible strapping" (p. 13).
- Red RTV silicone for vent joints other than the flue collar. Napoleon lists W573-0002 as not supplied.
- Framing lumber, fasteners and weatherproof caulking for the chase and the flashing.
Who Is Allowed to Install a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace?
A licensed installer. The Elevation X carries the "Napoleon Gas Appliance President's Lifetime Limited Warranty," and its terms state: "The gas appliance must be installed by a licensed, authorized service technician or contractor qualified and authorized installer, service agency or supplier" (Napoleon W415-2001, rev. A, 03.13.20, p. 22). The installation manual states: "THIS GAS APPLIANCE MUST BE INSTALLED AND SERVICED BY A QUALIFIED INSTALLER to conform with local codes" (W415-2000, rev. L-0, p. 8). American Hearth Supply supplies equipment and does not perform installation.
Why Does One Dealer Quote $5,549 and Another $7,600?
They can be quoting the same fireplace. $5,549 is the firebox alone. Add the $479 log set, $389 panels and about $1,200 of venting and the total is about $7,617, which is the $7,600 quote. Before comparing two quotes, check whether each one has the log set, the decorative panels, the finishing kit, and a vent package with the terminal kit for your roof pitch, the couplers and the ceiling firestop. Also confirm freight is on the quote.
What Does a Linear Gas Fireplace Cost?
The same rule applies: the listed price is a firebox. On our site the Napoleon Vector LV38 single-sided is $5,039 and the Tall Linear Vector TLV50N is $8,019. Venting, finish materials and installer labor are additional, and the Luminous Logs Tall Vector models ship without logs.
